Firefox 1.5
You can now get Firefox 1.5 from mozilla.com.
I have been a beta tester for this new release of Firefox and I have greatly enjoyed its new speed and new features. I strongly suggest checking it out. I certainly prefer it to Internet Explorer. I am addicted to tabbed browsing and IE didn't add that feature until very recently. Now the only reason to use IE is for web sites that were designed poorly.

I haven't found Firefox to be any worse or better for machine speed than IE. After all, both will suck down a lot of memory with normal surfing.
Firefox's impact on memory usage is highly configurable.

In what regards is it faster? Are pages loading faster? I downloaded and installed it today and can't say I really notice anything different. Right now it is sucking up 98MB of RAM, but it will go higher, I'm sure. What's your technique for getting it to use less RAM?

To me it seems that Firefox renders more quickly than 1.0.6 did on my machine, all other things being equal. I do have a pretty quick Internet connection, and I do allow a 100MB disk cache, but I have Firefox set to clear my cache when I shut it down.
One thing that will make Firefox very quickly is using the Adblock extension to filter out all the flash ads and other wasteful content. I have adblock off at the moment (there were some difficulties with it during the beta) but I'll likely reenable it soon.
