Zarqawi And Muhammad Die On The Same Day

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed in a bombing raid north of Bagdad. Plenty of other bloggers and news outlets have said a bunch about this, but I want to point out that I'm sure the Al Qaeda big thinkers will pick up on the fact that he was killed the same day Muhammad died in 632 and claim Super-Duper-Martyr status for this terror leader.

Apologists for Islamic Terrorism will, of course, question the timing.

Update: A statement has come from the newest terror leader in Iraq…

The death of our leaders is life for us. It will only increase our persistence in continuing holy war so that the word of God will be supreme…

But he didn't pick up on the coincidence, or perhaps the irony, of this statement.

Update: So Zarqawi died the day before Muhammad did (see the comments). Does this mean he's a day short of being a real prophet?

Are you sure? The calendar has change since 632 AD, we're not even sure what birthday we should uses for George Washington. I'm sure Mo didn't even use a western calendar.

The Encyclopedia Britannica has it as June 8th, 632. I assume they corrected for Gregorian Drift, but perhaps that's too trusting.

Abu Masab al-Zarqawi, head of al-Qaeda in Iraq, was killed yesterday, June 7, 2006, in a U.S. air strike of an insurgent safehouse in Baqubah, Iraq. News of his death, along with pictures of his corpse had circulated widely today, June 8th.

Wikipedia's, On This Day, for June 8 also lists June 8th, "the 159th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar (160th in leap years)", as the day "Muhammad, Prophet of Islam" died in 632.
