Addition Progress: Porch Posts
Misty snapped a picture of the newly-completed posts for the front porch this morning:
We're expecting to put in gutters right away, but we're not sure we should put them on the porch. We considered a downspout integrated into the posts, or chains instead of a downspout, but now we think that there's just not enough surface area to justify gutters on that small roof. Plenty of other gutters to install on the house (especially for the four big valleys that accumulate so much rain).
The other big step is finishing up the landscaping. Monday we will have more topsoil and Hydroseed.
My folks are visiting around Memorial Day (and they are attending my graduation), so we are scurrying to finish all the remaining items.

My recommendation is to put up gutters, even though it is a small area. We get around 36 inches of rain per year. It would be fun to do a calculation and estimate the number of gallons of water dripping off those edges in the next twelve months. As they drip, they will leave a mud splash line on the side of your very pricey and oh-so-elegant natural cedar siding. You will only notice it if you skip the gutters.

We've had no gutters at all for years, and the only reason we are considering them is the two new valley we've just added to the roof. Misty is certainly aware of the line in the mud caused by rain coming off the roof, but we think the downside of a goofy-looking porch outweighs the small line in the clay caused by the porch runoff.
We can always add it later if it doesn't work out. Far easier to add things than take them away.
